Between Worlds:
Contemporary Mexican Photography
Curated by Trisha Ziff
Between Worlds explores the rich cultural complexity of Mexico through the eyes of 21 Mexican photographers and writers. The exhibition captures the country's contrasts—between past and present, indigenous and modern, sacred and profane—revealing a society both timeless and evolving.
Highlighting Mexico's unique identity, the show includes Flor Garduño’s mystical images of humans and their animal spirits, and Rubén Ortiz’s vibrant portrayals of urban pop culture. It also confronts Mexico's relationship with the U.S., as seen in Pedro Meyer’s critiques of American consumerism and Eniac Martínez’s documentation of Mixtec migrants caught between two cultures. Other works feature the enduring revolutionary spirit of the Zapatistas, harsh labor conditions in coffee plantations, and women taking on unfamiliar roles in male-dominated spaces.
Photographers like Pablo Ortiz Monasterio celebrate native groups preserving ancient traditions. Accompanying texts by prominent Mexican writers further enrich this powerful and multifaceted view of a nation navigating identity, migration, and modernity.
