Impossible to Forget:
The Nazi Camps Fifty Years After -Photographs by Michael Kenna
Organized by Patrimoine Photographique, Paris
With the support of the French Ministry of Culture
Impossible to Forget: The Nazi Camps Fifty Years After is a poignant exhibition of 88 black-and-white photographs by English photographer Michael Kenna, documenting former Nazi concentration and extermination camps across Europe. Taken over twelve years beginning in 1988, the images depict sites in Germany, Poland, Austria, France, and other countries, capturing how these places of horror have been preserved.
Born after World War II, Kenna did not witness the Holocaust, but his first visit to the Natzweiler-Struthof camp in 1986 deeply moved him. Through hauntingly quiet images, he conveys the immense suffering and inexpressible loss that still lingers in the empty spaces of these camps. His work transforms these locations into landscapes of reflection and memory, offering a visual meditation on the Holocaust’s enduring impact.
The exhibition serves as a powerful reminder of the atrocities committed and underscores the moral imperative for current and future generations to remember the eleven million lives lost.
