Tracey Moffatt

Curated by Gael Newton

Tracey Moffatt is a prominent Australian artist and independent filmmaker whose work draws heavily from her personal experiences growing up Aboriginal and female in a white foster family in suburban Brisbane. Her art challenges social norms around gender, race, and identity, often reinterpreting media stereotypes and exploring the dual nature of violence.

Known as a “director of photo-narratives,” Moffatt approaches her photographic and cinematic works with a painterly sensibility, using carefully controlled elements like sound, lighting, and composition to build complex, multilayered stories. Her titles often act as visual puns, and she frequently casts herself in the lead roles, blending autobiography with fiction.

Curated by Gael Newton, this exhibition surveys Moffatt’s career and features key photographic series such as Something More, Scarred for Life, Up in the Sky, and Laudanum, along with films including Nice Coloured Girls (1987), Night Cries (1989), Bedevil (1993), and Heaven (1997).
