The effects of climate change have evolved from just a localized scope—the “affected area” is now a global matter. As natural resources near complete depletion, the lifestyles and wellbeing of people and animals are at jeopardy as they pioneer a new way of living.
In his new, ongoing global series The Day May Break, Nick Brandt addresses the devastating impact of climate change on both people and animals. Nick’s poignant pairing of animal and human, always photographed together in the same frame, brings the consequences of ecological and economic displacement into sharp focus.
All native inhabitants of their home countries of Zimbabwe, Kenya and Bolivia, the sitters are photographed in the same frame at the same time. Positioned just out of reach and never meeting each other’s eyes, Nick’s subjects gaze through and beyond the camera, evaluating their next move as they contemplate a new way of living.
With distinctive visual eloquence, the photographs in The Day May Break wake us from complacency, alerting us to global catastrophe.
