Greene & Greene:
Architects in the Residential Style. Photograph by William Current
Curated by Karen Current-Sinsheimer
In 1894, two brothers— Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene— began a small architecture firm in Pasadena, California. Drawn by their interest in the newly flourishing “California Bungalow” style, the Greenes applied a genius for design, an innate feeling for materials, and a rich architectural vocabulary to homes that today are considered the zenith of the Craftsman aesthetic.
Made over a 20-year period, William Current’s images are undoubtedly the finest photographic record of the Greene and Greene homes as architectural treasures ld him to begin documenting as early as 1950, after which few survived demolition or alteration.
