Sequence: New York/New Jersey, 1990-1993
Photographs by George Segal

Curated by Howard Greenberg

Sequence is the first major photography exhibition by George Segal, a prominent American sculptor. Comprising 26 black-and-white images, the series captures scenes from the New York and New Jersey neighborhoods where Segal lives and works.

The photographs, like his sculptures and drawings, are moody and expressive, presenting familiar urban settings—cafes, bars, streets, bedrooms—with haunting intensity. Segal intentionally arranged the images to be viewed as a continuous sequence in the gallery, echoing the narrative styles of photographers like Robert Frank and Garry Winogrand. He describes the energy and fragmentation of the urban landscape as central to both the inspiration and visual experience of the work. For Segal, photography offers creative satisfaction equal to that of sculpture and drawing.

The exhibition debuted at the Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York, which also published a hardcover book titled Sequence, featuring the complete series and an essay by the artist himself.
